My 300 Gallon Fish Tank – Oscars and More (part 2)

3 months later and all fish growing nicely except the 7 Tiger barbs that dissapeard in the middle of the night This tank houses 1 Tiger Oscar, 1 Albino Tiger Oscar, 10 Tiger Barbs, 3 Pictus Cats, 2 Electric Yellow Labs, 2 Turquoise Severums, 2, Gold Severums (new), 5 Silver Dollars, 3 Polka Dot Botias, 2 Acei Cichlids & 1 Dinosaur Bichir. A couple of the residents didn’t want to appear on camera.

10 gallon Freshwater Aquarium

Residents: 3 Zebra Danios, 3 Gold Danios Cleaning Crew: 3 Amano (Yamato / algae eating) shrimps, 1 male Red Claw Crab Plants: Anubias Nana (dwarf), Java Fern attached to bogwood, Marimo (moss) ball. Filtering is carried out by an airpump driven undergravel filter and a 80gal/h hang on back power filter. Heater is a 50W submersible. CO2 is pumped in every now and then via a DIY CO2 generator (water, yeast, sugar combo in a 2.5L soda bottle.) Diffuser in the end of the air line is a plain, round, bamboo chopstick. To keep crab zealots happy one bogwood reaches out of water surface, and a table spoon of evaporated sea salt is added in every few water changes. Infamously, red clawed crabs are escape artists. My crab, Houdini, as his name suggests, now live in a hot glued, old vertical blind cutout reinforced full hooded tank. The light in the hood is a 18W, 8000K fluorescent light strip.

Is it safe to put the silk plants meant for home decor into my fresh water aquarium?

I also put a lava rock into my tank. It’s a newly established tank, and the ph and ammonia levels are fine, but I have a high fish mortality rate and am wondering if the fake plants are the culprit.

Silk plants are made a variety of ways. if they are not labeled aqaurium safe they may have toxic chemicals in the dyes, stem and adhesives causing your fish death.

There is a company that makes aquarium safe silk plants which will work fine, but yu cannot safely use just any craft store silk plant.

Often the stems are made of a cheap low cost metal material that reacts in water, the adhesvie glues can break down and release toxins, and teh dyes of the leaves are soluable in water and release into it. Also, they may not be true ‘silk’ leaves and may be a synthetic that is not safe for aqauriums.

Plastic plants ansd the new ultrarealistic plants are a good choice. The new varieties are very relasitic.
