There are a number of saltwater tank supplies and equipment you will need to have a healthy environment for your saltwater fish. Being familiar and knowing each element is crucial, but it does not have to be overwhelming. You will find that when most of the saltwater tank supplies are set up you will not need to maintenance them too much. Most of your maintenance will be in cleaning and water testing.

Some of the more common saltwater tank supplies you will need are: thermometer, filters, pumps, lighting, a heater, sea salt mixes, and water testing kits. Each one of these tools have an effect on your saltwater fish tank. The kind of supplies you will need also depends on what you will put in your fish tank. If you are going to have reef tank you will need more equipment that is more sensitive and if you have just a fish tank you will find there is less equipment and more ‘slack’ in some of the tank monitoring.

While all the saltwater tank supplies are easy to use, you will need to be familiar with each one. There are numerous resources on the internet you can find to teach you and you should also consult a local expert as well.

People often comment on how hard or how much work their saltwater tank takes. This is normally due to lack of knowledge before they got started. Some people will go for a huge tank of 100 gallons or more, while some people think smaller is easier and get a 10 gallon tank. For beginners it is recommended that you look at saltwater tanks in the sizes of 30-50 gallons. These sizes allow for a person to get use to the care of a saltwater tank, but it also gives the most room for error. Large and small tanks require more specific care because you are either needing to tend to bigger area with more marine life to care for or deal with how picky a small tank is with no room for error.

One of the better websites I’ve found is wetwebmedia. The owner is a marine zoologist and also has several books on marine aquaria: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/

And another good forum: http://www.reefcentral.com/

Also, see this website from another user here who is in the business professionally – his is the most up-to-date with new equipment on the market: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Information.html

For books (which I do recommend), try The New Marine Aquarium by Michael S. Paletta. Microcosm Ltd. ISBN 1-890087-52-1 or The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert M. Fenner. Microcosm Ltd. ISBN 1-890087-02-5 for the basics. Once you get into more specific aspects of marine aquaria, anything by Julian Sprung is good.

It’s good to see someone doing their research before buying. You’re right in that there are differences in setups, from fish-only (the least expensive) to fish-only with live rock (FOWLR, almost as cheap, but more natural looking and better biofiltration), to reef (most expensive and hardest to maintain).

If you plan it well, you can start at an easier level and switch over to reef as you gain experience, or start right into a reef tank, starting with easier soft corals, then moving into stony corals. Your only limited by the amount of work you want to do for upkeep and your budget.

ADDITION: If you get into live rock, you’ll get lots of neat hitchikers – this is a good guide to identifying them: http://home2.pacific.net.ph/~sweetyummy42/hitchhikers.html

And a good resource for diseases of marine fish: http://home2.pacific.net.ph/~sweetyummy42/disease.html
References :

Having healthy marine aquarium fish is hard for some people to accomplish. Many people wonder why their fish die and other people have happy vibrant fish. Below you will see three things you can do to keep your fish healthy.

To Have Healthy Fish You Need Good Habits

Keep The Temperature Stable- Saltwater fish need stability in a home aquarium just like they do in nature. One aspect that is critical to healthy marine fish is to keep the temperature constant and not let it vary by more then a degree or two.

Avoid placing your saltwater aquarium in direct sunlight or by drafty windows or doors. In summertime you may need to make sure that the temperature in your saltwater tank does not overheat in the daytime and cool off at night.

Feed a Varied Diet- When they are in the ocean saltwater fish do not eat the same thing everyday, they eat a variety of things. When they are in your home aquarium they should also be fed a variety of things to keep them healthy and their diets complete.

This can easily be accomplished by feeding a few different types of food and using some of the different food additives that are on the market. Fish who have this varied diet will be more colorful and much more healthy.

Keep The Stress Down- Stress is the number one killer and cause of disease in marine fish. Stress can come from aggressive tank mates, over stocking the tank or an over anxious owner that constantly is sticking heir hands into their saltwater aquarium.

If you properly stock your saltwater tank with compatible fish and avoid putting your hands into the tank unless necessary you should be able to eliminate stress from the system and have healthy fish because of it.
