3 months later and all fish growing nicely except the 7 Tiger barbs that dissapeard in the middle of the night This tank houses 1 Tiger Oscar, 1 Albino Tiger Oscar, 10 Tiger Barbs, 3 Pictus Cats, 2 Electric Yellow Labs, 2 Turquoise Severums, 2, Gold Severums (new), 5 Silver Dollars, 3 Polka Dot Botias, 2 Acei Cichlids & 1 Dinosaur Bichir. A couple of the residents didn’t want to appear on camera.

Will you help me pick an aquarium setup for college?

Okay, so I’m going to college in the fall, so I’m getting rid of my 75 gallon planted goldfish tank because it simply wouldn’t fit in the dorm, and it would be a pain having to have people help me lug the thing around twice a year. I won’t feel right without some type of aquatic pet, so I’m trying to decide between a 10 gallon nano-reef tank and a 10 gallon tank with an african clawed frog. I am aware of the difficulties involved in keeping a nano-reef tank. I have had saltwater fish before, and I have kept aquariums since the age of 9.

The pros of the nano-reef are the following:
-It’s breathtakingly beautiful
-I want it more

The cons are:
-more maintenance
-I can’t leave it alone for long
-more expensive (although I can afford it without worry)

The pros for the frog tank are:
-it’s cheaper
-they are cool and I miss having one
-easier to keep
-it will sing to me

Cons for the frog:
-I think I would be dissatisfied.

What other fish can I put in with my betta in a 3 gallon bowl?

To the people who have suggested putting goldfish with bettas:

Goldfish are COLDWATER fish, and bettas are TROPICAL fish. They have extremely different water temperature needs, and you can’t mix a fish that thrives in 65 degrees with one that thrives in 80 degrees.

Bettas don’t really need buddies. Some people have successfully integrated a single male betta into their community tank (we’re talking big tanks.. not a 3 gallon bowl), but many other people have not done this successfully. Bettas prefer to be alone, and while some can tolerate tankmates, it’s not ideal.

In regular aerated, filtered tanks, you might be able to put bettas with docile, short-finned community fish like tetras, but there’s not much you can do with 3 gallons.

Your best bet is either a live plant (try a java fern, they’re beautiful, very low-maintence, and help keep Mr. Betta’s water cleaner), or a snail (but not a snail and a plant… the snail will eat the plant). However, some bettas take great pleasure in nipping at snails.
