So I have been trying to breed bettas FOREVER! I have a white/red crowntail female betta called “geisha”. Then I have my male. Apparently when I got him…he is a dragon betta, but I’m still confused about the difference in the two kinds. His name is Naruto cause he is blue/yellow. This pair stays in a huge 20 gallon tank i have with tetra…they never were agressive with each other. About a week ago I noticed that the female grew tremendously fat with eggs ( i could see it in her cause she is all white) so I thought about breeding her with Naruto. Now I did try to breed her before, but I think she was too young too so they were never successful. So this time I put them in a 5 gallon tank with some live plants. had her in a jar and water up to 5 inches. Left him and her in there for two days with half a styro-foam cup and foiled the top of the tank. After two days Naruto had made a good size bubble nest so I decided to release her. She was really tempted to spawn. She would stay under the bubble nest and wait for him. Now I had the water temp at about 77F. At first i was going to take her out cause he was being kind of aggressive towards her when she went toward his nest, but I thought to myself, it’s normal for spawning. So I left them in there for 2 days. I went to go check and she was super skinny. Looked at the nest and saw little rice pecks under the bubbles. I took her out and put her back in my 20 gallon where she recovered. (considering seeing eggs in her again 2 …

If you compare the difference between the salt water or marine fish and freshwater fish, you know that the fish for freshwater aquariums can be a bit dull and boring compared to salt water fish. However, there is one fish for freshwater fish tanks that is so beautiful and exotic it can rival any of the marine fish.

This fish is the Betta or Japanese fighting fish. You’ve probably seen them sitting In tiny round bowls at your pet store. These are the beautifully colored fish with long flowing fins that come in a range of red, purple’s and aqua’s.

These fish exhibit a grace and beauty that compares to none other and you might just one of the lucky fish tank with a dozen of them. However, this wouldn’t be very good idea since male Bettas – the ones with the long fins – a very territorial and will fight to the death.

When buying Bettas for your fish tank you need to make sure that you only have one male aquarium. You can have more than one female, but the females are not as beautiful as the males having much shorter fins and in fact, the females can also fight but are not as aggressive as the males.

in addition to being beautiful, the Betta is also one of the few freshwater fish that can survive in water that has little in as they can actually take the oxygen from the air itself. But just because they can survive in a little tiny bowls doesn’t mean you should subject him to such a boring life. just like with any fish the bigger the aquarium and the better the water quality and healthier you fish will be.

If you do decide to keep your Betta are in a small fish bowl you’ll need to spend a lot of time doing water changes in making sure that the water quality is good enough for your fish to size. The water in a small bowl will soon become toxic due to decaying food and wastes and there is not enough room in a small bowl for enough bacteria to build up for sufficient biological filtration. You should probably change out half the water to three times a week in order to keep the ammonia nitrate levels at bay. Also be sure that your fish gets the appropriate heat and light necessary to survive.

Feeding your Betta the appropriate food will help keep him healthy and colorful. Bettas are carnivores and will need a meat-based feed food. They like food such as prime time, freeze dried blood worms and you can also buy food specifically formulated for the Betta fish. If you’re feeding him frozen brine shrimp, thaw it out so that your Betta can digest it properly. Don’t overfeed refresh, simply given up what he can eat in a minute or two as you want to avoid having food rot on the bottom of your tank which will reduce the water quality.

Bettas like a water temperature that is around 78 to 80°F and it is good to keep this temperature consistent. keep your tank away from windows so that algae does not build up and also keep it out of drafts or sunlight is the sunlight can heat the water up to much. Adding live plants suitable or aquarium can help filter the water and keep the quality at peak levels.

Please excuse bluntness, and know that my animals’ welfares are #1 in all of this
<period>. Money and time will not be considered. You can view the tank here: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v51/elves117711/Fishy/

Tank: 16 gal tall (20 long x 10 wide x 19 depth). Filled with TONS of fake plants and about 3-3.5 inches of sand-gravel mix. Kept at about 78-80*F (no choice, temp increases due to my tank light).

**Tank Plan 1: Empty all water from tank and transport tank with sand still in place (if Dad thinks he can lift it without the tank breaking <-any advice??). A very very small amount of water will be left to keep the sand wet (don’t want to kill bacteria) and the larger decorations will be kept buried in tank during transport. I will flip the decorations regularly to ensure they remain damp and covered with damp sand. Slowly lower water temp over 2 days.
**Tank Plan 2: Empty entire tank to the bottom (i.e nothing but glass). Put the sand in a large tub and keep lightly dampened in the same matter. Main concern: keeping sand in tank to save room in SUV. Slowly lower water temp over 2 days.

Community: 1- Passive Male Betta, 2- Female Dwarf Gauramis (fairly passive), 7 Zebra Danios, and 2 mystery snails. (Please note, my tank is not overstocked -I have had many opinions-none professional claiming it to be overstocked-and researched before implementing; the one gal/inch adult is a *general*, beginner's rule. I did a great deal of research before introducing these fish to each other. I have had no problems with the community what so ever.)

**Fish Plan 1: Fill this tub (little less than 4 gal http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31kPJSG1ttL.jpg&imgrefurl=http://oaktreefoods.com/tag/sterilite&usg=__TkIuLH6YXy13jz2c0RDZheCIutA=&h=500&w=500&sz=13&hl=en&start=16&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=_53GZdpEAB7ioM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsterilite%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1T4ADRA_enUS349US349%26tbs%3Disch:1) with aquarium’s water. Put dwarves, danios, and snails into it with many if not all fake plants. The same will be done with this one gallon http://www.petco.com/product/104215/PETCO-1-Gallon-Corner-Aquarium-Kit.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch and the betta will go in that with a plant or two. Cover both “moving tanks” with towels but check periodically to ensure that all fish appear normal during transport. Aquarium salt will be provided in each moving tank. Fish not fed for day and half to decrease ammonium levels.
**Fish Plan 2: Take all fish out and put into separate baggies: Betta in one, 3 danios in one, 4 danios in another, two gauramis in one, 2 snails in one. Put all bags into a cooler and close lid. Each will have aquarium salt. Fish not fed for day and half to decrease ammonium levels.
Plans’ Concern: I have never used API stress coat. Will the salt do just as well? I would prefer to not start using new products.

Lid: Marineland’s Eclipse 1; includes carbon filter.
**Filter Plan 1: Drain filter and remove lid from tank. Throw out carbon filter. Float bio-wheel wherever (depends on which Fish Plan I decide on) –rotated periodically to ensure wetness.

**Get-there Plan: Carry tank to room (2nd floor, there is elevator) and set up on stand. Get lid all ready to install. Get tank sand all ready. Pour about 4 gallons of water (taken from aquarium) into tank. Check temp differences with electric cooking thermometer. –Assuming same temp-- Introduce fish (all but snails and betta who should be fine waiting) and fake plants to tank. Let bio-wheel float. Set up decorations. Float betta and snails separately in tank for 10-15 min or so (to help with any possible stress-aggression). Set out & condition any needed additional water at this time (pour in once temp is =). Introduce betta & snails. Fish will not eat for 24-36 hrs.

To the people who have suggested putting goldfish with bettas:

Goldfish are COLDWATER fish, and bettas are TROPICAL fish. They have extremely different water temperature needs, and you can’t mix a fish that thrives in 65 degrees with one that thrives in 80 degrees.

Bettas don’t really need buddies. Some people have successfully integrated a single male betta into their community tank (we’re talking big tanks.. not a 3 gallon bowl), but many other people have not done this successfully. Bettas prefer to be alone, and while some can tolerate tankmates, it’s not ideal.

In regular aerated, filtered tanks, you might be able to put bettas with docile, short-finned community fish like tetras, but there’s not much you can do with 3 gallons.

Your best bet is either a live plant (try a java fern, they’re beautiful, very low-maintence, and help keep Mr. Betta’s water cleaner), or a snail (but not a snail and a plant… the snail will eat the plant). However, some bettas take great pleasure in nipping at snails.
