Water chemistry and its changes must be properly noted in an aquarium set up.  This is important because each variable have direct effects on how the whole freshwater aquarium behaves.  It can affect the fish, and plants regardless of type and classification.  Water Ph must be clearly defined and determined from time to time.  Not only ph levels but also ammonia, nitrites and nitrates level have to be timely accounted for.  When these chemicals left unnoticed for a long time a more fatal effect will be seen on the fish and animals inside your aquarium.  These are some helpful information for a better understanding on water chemistry change.
Change in PH levelsPH means potentiality to hydrogen or the measure of the water’s acidity or alkalinity.  Water pH is measured as the amount of extra hydrogen ions (H+) or hydroxide ions (H-) present in a water solution.  Water is considered to be acidic when it has a pH of less than 7.0, more than 7.0 levels the water is determined to be alkaline.  Search for more information of fish ph tolerance since each fish has distinct characteristic from each other.  Do not put fish in a too acidic nor too alkaline type of water because they can’t live longer.  Water ph level greatly affects fish life span so it must be monitored closely.
Fish Tank Ph TestWater Ph test are now readily available in any local hobby stores for a more practical way of measuring water change of your aquarium.  Test kits must be used properly and applied accordingly.  The most common types used nowadays are the ph solutions, litmus paper, rocks, gravels and other substrates can also be used to test ph.  For those who planned to use tap water for your aquarium, before placing those water to the fish tank it is a must to check the tap water’ acidity first.  To test you tap water you can dip some stones and gravel for 2 to 7 days.  If there are noted changes on the water then you can add some standard substrates unto it.
Maintain constant PH levelTo keep fish and other plants healthy and alive a constant ph level must be met.   Sudden change of water ph levels over a period of time may cause fatal stress to fish that can lead to their untimely death.  Though it is hard to keep and maintain a constant water ph level a tolerable change of 0.1 to 0.2 is acceptable. 
How to control water ph levelWater ph level control can be done manually.  When you add water to your fish tank be sure it is safe for all the aquatic life inside the aquarium.  Tap water can be tested by adding some pebbles, rocks, crushed gravel and other specific substrate materials to significantly raise the ph level.  If water ph is found to be too high now then you can lower it by adding some driftwood and or pumping a required amount of carbon dioxide to the water.
There are still other ways of testing your water ph change through using ph solutions and litmus paper and can be used easily.  Using the ph solution you can drop 2 to 3 times of the solution to the water when it turns out to be yellow or orange it can be acidic while it turns into blue or green then it is said to be alkaline. Litmus paper can work the same way too as ph solution does.
Water change in your freshwater aquarium can greatly affect the life of all the marine creatures living on it.  It is not advised to have a too high nor too low water ph level because it can kill or damage your fish and other aquatic plants.  Therefore it must be watched out for closely and in a regular manner.
